profile

The Thuringian organ academy has been founded by Dr Felix Friedrich in 1991 and run by him until 2021. It is aimed at students of church music and organ related courses of study (Bachelor, Master, diploma, concert exam), organists, church musicians as well as organ builders and those interested in organs in general.

In the past, the organ academy attracted participants from all over the world: Scandinavia, South Africa, Australia, Japan, South Korea, China. Inspiring encounters and intense communications between participant and guest professors are made possible.

The aim of the academy is to connect significant historical monumental organs in Thuringia and Central Germany and to gain creative inspiration from these instruments. They are connective, differentiated, emotional, organic and vivid and therefore still relevant in modern times. Through lively demonstrations of the organs a profound comprehension for conception, sound and styles of playing are developed. Creative consequences for interpretation, improvisation, composition, aesthetics, organ building and artistical vision are built.

As the 32. Thuringian organ academy deals with subjects like “150th birthday of Max Reger” – “Sound of Bach’s organ” – “contemporary music in interpretation, improvisation and composition” – “Heinrich Tobias Gottfried Trost”, it is situated at organs by Trost, Volckland, Schröter, Silbermann, Hoffmann, Wender, Steinmeyer and Sauer.

Deep insights in Trost’s organ building work can be gained in a discussion regarding the restoration of the Trost organ in Altenburg with Helmut Werner (1972-76 former senior restorer at organ builders Eule), Klaus Gernhardt (former restorer at the museum for musical instruments Leipzig) and Dr Felix Friedrich (castle organist 1976–2021, initiator of the restoration).

The Trost organ of Altenburg castle, that Bach himself played in 1739, is played in the gala at the end of the Thuringian organ academy.
